Academic Writing

Time and place: November 8-10, 2022,University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio campus

Learning goal and objectives:

This intensive 3-day course focuses on the craft of academic writing for producing scholarly publications. The emphasis of this course will be on viewing writing as a practical tool for communicating research ideas. The course will allow to learn hands-on approaches for working on micro- and macro- elements of academic texts to ensure an effective expression of the intended meaning. Moreover, one the days is dedicated to learning how to approach writing as a process, create a writing habit and cope with the challenges associated with pressures and deadlines for delivering academic pieces to scientific outlets and forums. After the course participants will have knowledge and skills to:

  • Engage in different styles of academic writing
  • Apply principles of effective writing and editing to their work
  • Approach writing as a process and create a sustainable writing habit
  • Develop a high-quality writing for a scholarly publication

Instruction and examination:

The participants will submit a pre-assignment, where they will indicate their writing abilities and experience. The course consists of 3 days of in-class lectures and workshops, where participants will be expected to participate in an active manner. After the course the participants will write a post-assignment, where they will reflect on their learning during the course. In addition to the lectures, the course material consists of a reading package of articles, books and book chapters.

Credits: 4 (ECTS)

Grading: Evaluation will be conducted based on the assessment of pre-course and in-class assignments. Grading scale is Pass/Fail

Prerequisites: The course is intended for junior academic scholars and PhD students in management and organization studies. Participants are expected to have experience in academic writing, and/or have started thesis writing process (PhD students).

Admittance: 25 participants are admitted to the course.The applicants are to enrol to the course by emailing the course coordinator by Sep 15, 2022. After that the students will be sent a Moodle key and instructions for writing the pre-assignment. The deadline for the pre-assignment is on Oct 1, 2022 and a notification of acceptance to the course will be sent by Oct 10, 2022. The deadline for the post-assignment is on Nov 30, 2022.

Instructors:

Irina Mihailova, Associate Professor of International Business, University of Eastern Finland, and Carol Kiriakos, Ph.D., Writing Doctor Oy.

Irina Mihailova is Associate Professor of International Business at the University of Eastern Finland. She has earned her PhD in 2010 from Aalto University. Irina’s research interests include digital international scaling, business models and internationalization strategies of digital firms, institutional development in emerging markets, and qualitative research methods. Irina’s work has appeared in Academy of Management Review, Organization Studies, Journal of World Business, Management and Organization Review, Management International Review, and Thunderbird International Business Review, amongst others.

Carol Kiriakos, Ph.D. has extensive experience in developing new kind of psychological, practice-based support for writers in and outside the academia. She has taught doctoral candidates and advanced academics at Aalto University School of Business for over ten years in 2010-2021. She holds a Master’s degree in Social Psychology (University of Helsinki, 2004) and a Ph.D. in Sociology (European University Institute, 2010). Prior to specializing in writing support, she conducted research on distributed work and the global mobility of skilled Finns. She has published a popular writing guide Tohtoritakuu for doctoral candidates with Kimmo Svinhufvud in 2015. Her article ‘Academic Writing as Love’ with Janne Tienari won Management Learning Best Paper Award in 2018. She currently coaches writers through her company Writing Doctor: www.writingdoctor.fi
