Learning goal and objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have gained an overview of critical research conducted in the fields of business, management and accounting, and relating to both private and public sector organizations. The student will be able to recognize societal injustices, problems and risks requiring critical academic scrutiny. The student will also possess a theoretical and methodological toolbox for understanding and analysing these phenomena. The student will also have gained an initial understanding of how to articulate research implications in the form of societal action programs.
The instructors’ approach to the theme is broad and cross-disciplinary. The course is hence suitable for doctoral students across a variety of disciplines (e.g. accounting, CSR, management, marketing, organization studies).
Instruction and examination
The instruction on the course will consist of lectures, small group discussions, and mentoring sessions. In order to pass the course, the students should attend the lectures and sessions as well as write an analytical, reflective essay on a topic to be assigned by the instructors.
Credits: 5 ECTS
Grading: On a scale from 1 (pass) to 5 (excellent).
Prerequisites: The participants should have a Master’s degree and be enrolled as doctoral students in their respective universities. A pre-readings list comprising key articles will be compiled by the instructors and sent to the participants shortly after acceptance. The participants are also required to write a short (max 1,000 word) description of their PhD research and the most pressing problems that they would like the instructors to comment on (this will be requested after acceptance).
Admittance: In selecting the participants the general guidelines of KATAJA will be followed. The maximum number of students is 25. There is no participation fee for the course, although each student will need to cover her/his travel expenses, accommodation and meals.
