Meta-Methods for the PhD Journey

Time and place: Aalto University, 16.8-20.8.2027

Learning goal and objectives: This course is aimed at providing a helpful meta resource s for PhD students/researchers in business disciplines, to navigate through their PhD journey. The first part of the course discusses important aspects of PhD research, such as generating research ideas and developing empirical research plans, targeting top academic journals. The second part of the course is focused on the role of conferences and academic feedback during the PhD journeys, and the intricacies of obtaining a PhD degree. The third part is dedicated to the ins and outs of the publication strategy (e.g., how to increase the chances of a Revise and Resubmit decision from a top academic journal). The final part comprises possibly the most important elements of the PhD journey, such as getting a first job, achieving a work-life balance and general career management.

In addition to classroom discussions, students will also obtain 1-to-1 mentoring, regarding any aspects of the PhD journey. Overall, this course underlines the notion that each PhD journey is unique and customizable.

Upon completing this course, students should:

  1. Understand how to collect different data sources and generate research ideas, targeting top academic journals
  2. Understand the role of academic conferences and the intricacies of obtaining a PhD degree
  3. Be able to develop a publication strategy
  4. Have increased their chances of getting their first academic job as well as of achieving a work-life balance.
  5. Have the pre-conditions for constructing a successful academic career

 Instruction and examination:

  1. Pre-assignment
  2. Participation in classes
  3. Writing a final assignment based on the exercises provided during class

Credits: 3 ECTS

Grading: Grading on a scale 0-5. Grading is based on the written final assignment (2) above.

Final grades with individual feedback will be released within one month from the due date of the final assignment.

Prerequisites: None

Admittance: A maximum of 20 are admitted to the course. The last application date will be one month before the start of the course. Students will be informed about admissions three weeks before the start of the course.

Dr. Anatoli Colicev is a Chair in Marketing, Strategy, and Analytics at the University of Liverpool School of Management. He serves as an Associate Editor at the International Journal of Research in Marketing and Journal of Retailing, as well as an editorial review board member of the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, and the Journal of International Business Studies. He is the creator of the PhD Journey slides – material that is directed to help academics around the world. His research interests are driven by his passions, by the research puzzles, and quite often by the people around him. Earning a PhD in Decision Sciences and Statistics (ESSEC Business School), his collaborations include the fields of marketing, management, operations management, accounting, finance, and economics. His topics include NFTs, blockchain and Web3, social media marketing, marketing-finance interface, ESG, and strategic management. He works with empirical data and collaborates with companies such as Metro AG, YouGov Group, and Equileap. His work has appeared in the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Strategic Management Journal, International Economics Review, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Global Strategy Journal, and others.

Dr. Jaakko Aspara is Professor at the Department of Marketing, Aalto University School of Business, Helsinki, Finland. His research interests cover a wide variety of topics ranging from business models, innovations, and new technologies, through new product development and brand management, to the interface of marketing and finance. Aspara’s research has been published in leading journals such as Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Consumer Psychology, Journal of Business Research, and European Journal of Marketing, among others.
