Course Name: Quantitative Approaches to Business Research
Time and place: 26 to 30 May 2025, Hanken School of Economics, Helsinki
Learning goal and objectives: The course introduces doctoral students in Management and Business Studies to statistical methods for analysing multivariate data. The methods covered in the course are linear regression, linear model selection, regularisation and machine learning, logistic regression, Poisson regression, multilevel models, panel data models, difference-in-differences and factor analysis. Best practice concerning the presentation of the empirical results is discussed in the course.
After completing the course, the student can undertake high-quality quantitative research in Management and Business Studies. The student can present empirical results in a way that meets the technical requirements of scientific journals in Management and Business Studies.
Instruction and examination: The course consists of 32 hours of lectures and practical exercise sessions. The first two lectures on matrix algebra and statistical inference are delivered by video lectures before the course starts.
The emphasis is on the practical use of statistical models in quantitative research. The examination constitutes of an article presentation during the course (20%) and a take-home exam after the course (80%).
Credits: 6 ECTS
Grading: Article analysis (20%) and take-home exam (80%). The course is graded on the scale from 1 to 5.
Prerequisites: Prerequisites are knowledge of statistics including regression at the master’s level in Management and Business Studies. No previous knowledge of matrix algebra is required. Two video lectures on matrix algebra and statistical inference will be made available before the course starts.
Admittance: The course is targeted towards (but not limited to) doctoral students in Accounting, International Business, Logistics, Management, Marketing, Strategy and other fields of Management and Business Studies. The maximum number of students admitted to the course is 25.
